It is known that the fascia, which is connective tissue that wraps around the muscle tissue, when tight locks the body either short in some areas and long in others. A good example would be when the shoulders round forward and the upper back is over opened.

The connective tissue holds the body in that unconscious position then forms deep layers that make it difficult to get the muscle fibers to release. The front chest would be closed, back shoulders open, which is very common for people with desk jobs or working on a computer with arms forward on the keyboard. The best way to release the connective tissue is heat it up through rolling on balls and foam rollers which then allows for range of motion to be brought back, especially around the joints. Add this to your regular practice... it is much like getting a massage!
